Protect Smithfield from Overdevelopment

Protect Our Roads • Protect Our Schools • Protect Our Future

Smithfield is a special town — but unchecked development threatens to change that. Large, high-density projects bring more than just new housing. They bring traffic, flooding, overcrowded schools, and pressure on our infrastructure

.

We believe in smart growth that respects neighborhoods, protects families, and keeps decision-making in local hands.

Key Concerns

Traffic and Safety

More cars on already busy roads will make daily commutes longer and neighborhoods less safe.

Flooding and Stormwater

New developments increase runoff and can worsen local flooding problems.

Overcrowded Schools

More students without proper planning strains teachers, classrooms, and resources. Our schools are already at capacity.

Infrastructure Strain

Water, sewer, and public safety services are already stretched thin.

Earlier this year, the Smithfield Town Council unanimously passed a resolution supporting three bills in the Rhode Island General Assembly that would have protected towns from forced overdevelopment. Unfortunately, these bills did not pass in the General Assembly.

These bills would have:

  • Given towns more control over where housing projects are located

  • Protected open space and preserved environmental resources

  • Ensured that new growth matches available infrastructure and school capacity

An Expert's Opinion

Land Use Planner and Environmental Scientist Scott Millar warns that Rhode Island’s new housing laws will lead to forced overdevelopment:

“Local communities will lose their ability to plan sensibly, and the result will be sprawl, congestion, and environmental harm.”
