Key Concerns
Traffic and Safety
More cars on already busy roads will make daily commutes longer and neighborhoods less safe.
Flooding and Stormwater
New developments increase runoff and can worsen local flooding problems.
Overcrowded Schools
More students without proper planning strains teachers, classrooms, and resources. Our schools are already at capacity.
Infrastructure Strain
Water, sewer, and public safety services are already stretched thin.
Earlier this year, the Smithfield Town Council unanimously passed a resolution supporting three bills in the Rhode Island General Assembly that would have protected towns from forced overdevelopment. Unfortunately, these bills did not pass in the General Assembly.

Given towns more control over where housing projects are located

Protected open space and preserved environmental resources

Ensured that new growth matches available infrastructure and school capacity
